Sb bicolor (margaritiferum) IS19953 Assembly and Gene Annotation

About Sorghum IS19953

IS19953 is a landrace of Sorghum bicolor collected at Namari (15.029999, -13.779999) in the province of Ferlo in Senegal. Its name is Nieniko and alternate identifiers are PI 514293 (USDA) and Sg. 1678 (IBPGR). It is considered to belong to the margaritiferum group, previously considered a sub-race of the guinea race. It was re-sequenced to broaden the sampling of the margaritiferum group to include an accession from Senegal.

Assembly

The genome assembly of Sorghum IS19953 was reported in Tao et al, 2021. Sequencing was conducted by the Australia Sorghum breeding team in collaboration with BGI-Shenzhen using Illumina HiSeq 4000 platform and the PacBio Sequel platform to achieve 172X and 34X coverage, respectively. The assembly effort generated a genome of 600Mb with contigs N50 of 385.2kb.

Annotation

Gene prediction was performed using a hybrid approach combining de novo gene predictors and evidence-based methods (Tao et al, 2021), which led to the identification of 35,713 genes in the genome.
